The protein encoded by this gene is a membrane glycoprotein that arises from an alternately spliced transcript arising from the human EGFR gene. The sEGFR protein is expressed in diverse human tissues, including blood. Changes in sEGFR in human blood may have clinical utility as a biomarker of certain diseases, including cancer. The cell surface protein gives rise to the circulating protein via proteolytic cleavage. sEGFR has also been show to regular cell:cell interactions (cohesion).
