Function:
MUC17 comprises of a signal peptide, a large central tandemly repeated central domain (TR), two EGF-like domains, a SEA (sea urchin sperm protein, enterokinase, and agrin) domain, a transmembrane domain (TM) and an 80 amino acid cytoplasmic tail (Cyt).
Human MUC17 and mouse homolog of human MUC17 i.e. Muc3 are highly expressed in the gallbladder, intestine, and colon and are localized in the upper villi of the intestine and on the surface and upper crypt cells of the colon. The expression of MUC17 is down regulated in ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD) as compared to normal controls. In addition to the inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), there is significant downregulation of MUC17 expression in the neoplastic conditions of colon such as hyperplastic polyps, tubular and tubulovillous adenoma and colon adenocarcinoma.
The extracellular regions contains two EGF-like Cys-rich domains (CRD1 and CRD2) connected by an intervening linker segment with SEA module (L), that may function to stimulate intestinal cell restitution.
